I'm currently testing some oddball audio formats at this site. So far, they all play with QuickTime. Have you tried using QT on that.
Correct me if I'm wrong and maybe this is a stupid comment being I'm joining the conv late. But it is my understanding that. It will play in VLC though. Just observations.
I'm just now trying to understand codecs myself and have no idea where to start. Downloaded the ffdshow but have no idea what the different boxes are for. MOV files will play with sound in Quick time or picass but my prob is that i want to be able to edit them wich means getting them into Movie Maker.
The ffdshow video codec worked to get the files into movie maker but the ffdshow audio codec doesn't come up and so no sound My only other gripe is that the ffdshow audio codec causes some odd behaviour when i play AVI files with WinMedPlay, I,e need to restart film to get audio and Vol control oin player doesn't work but have second WMP vol in sys tray mixer. Is it pos to stop WMP from using these ffdshow codecs? Scince the.
MOV files i want to edit come from a cam i am going to try importing them straight from cam to MovieMaker instead of saving to PC first. There you can enter applications that should NOT use ffdshow, where it says "Don't use ffdshow in:". Add WMPlayer. Apparently MS and Apple use different implementations that are incompatible.
Very strange. Thanks that's much better not interfearing with WMP, should have spotted that myself. All i want to be able to do is cut bits out trim and put different files together with transitions to make one movie of my son i can then burn to send to relatives.
Gordy, I don't know of a free editor for Quicktime movies. For now, you should go ahead and use the intermediate conversion step.
Convert the movies from. To reduce the effect of generation loss , you can use a format with very low compression such as DV AVI. Meanwhile, I'm curious about what kind of camcorder you have that makes these seemingly hard to import movies. Can you tell me the make and model? MOV into AVI format and so i had audio when in MM which is fine but with all of those free trials like with AVS they have a water mark in the middle of the screen, do you know any freeware that will do this conversion but without the watermark.
I'm not familiar with WinAVI or any other free converters. I use a commercial one. Did you try Format Factory? Gordy, glad to hear you got it working. There is always a way, I'm just always looking for the best way possible. Can you at least tell me what company makes that camcorder? Gardy, sorry for budging in. But I would be interested to know how you plan to edit your movies. I hope you are not going to ruin them with WMM. Hi both. The cam is just a reasonable quality camera. Yes i was going to use MovieMaker, omly runing vista home basic and that is the only editing software i've got unless u know of any better freeware.
For editing I suggest you try Machete. They snip and compose your movie without loosing a single bit and you can really notice the difference to WMM. You can try it out for 14 days and then decide whether you like it or not. I suggest to print out their short documentation because there are a few things you have to know. It is a simple but very effective tool.
With WMM you are always subject to their transformations and especially in the "recommended" settings, you get a dismal quality. In the better quality settings you get a file output that is twice as large - and still not as good as the original.
