I have the D90 and if I go into the settings and choose " Clean image sensor now" and press ok, I then get the image " Cleaning sensor" followed by "Done" when it's finished.

It has nothing to do with not being able to see or hear anything, simply the fact that the display goes back to Clean Image Sensor -- which makes me think it doesn't work.
