However, Augen's directions are pretty much unintelligible, so I'd recommend following the directions on this thread over at MobileRead instead.
Augen The Book has a 7-inch color TFT screen that has a pixel resolution of x , which is a lot narrower than the x that most ereaders use. The screen quality and color is good, and it is not glossy or a touchscreen, so there's a minimum of reflection.
The brightness of the backlight can be adjusted for different lighting conditions. The device uses very bold fonts that make reading outside in brighter light a little easier than with other LCD ereaders, tilted away from direct sunlight the text is fairly readable with the brightness turned all the way up.
The device has WiFi built-in, a web browser, video player, image viewer, notepad, it supports Adobe DRM for ebooks, and can play music. One of its most interesting features, The Book has a text-to-speech function that can read aloud just about any ebook or text-based PDF, DRM-encrypted ebooks included.
The Book has a speaker, 2. DRM-protected EPUBs have missing paragraphs and sentences, the margins are huge and not adjustable, landscape mode squeezes everything to the center, and there isn't any way to adjust or modify the layout, background color, line-spacing, add notes, highlight passages, lookup words in a dictionary, or anything that you'd expect from an e -reader.
On the positive side, DRM free ebooks display pretty well, save for the fact that The Book seems to have problems with apostrophes in some books, placing a space after them so that words look like this: don' t. The font is exceptionally bold, dark, and defined, and there are options for changing font type, line spacing, margins, and alignment.
The zoom function is hit or miss, there's no re-flow, and the G-sensor doesn't automatically rotate PDFs for some reason; you have to go in and set it to the highest zoom level to switch it to landscape view, which displays PDFs pretty good and readable.
Also, large PDFs take forever to load, often freeze up, and page-turns don't seem to work all the time. Some standard features need to be added that most other devices offer, like being able to add notes what's the keyboard for? Playing videos is what The Book does best. The specs over at JR. I tested several different MP4's and they all played well, with no lag or jumpiness except when first starting them and when adjusting the volume.
During video playback, you can skip forward or back with the nav wheel and pause by pressing the nav wheel button. Want more great deals? Sign up for our Daily Digest emails! The once-useful Hulu is starting to move to a cable-style subscription model, like those executives have no idea that network television has given away their shows since, oh, DAY ONE. The music industry is turning into just a lawyer pile, artists who used to make music are making drama and tell-all books, small indie website bookstores are closing, and what can you do?
You, the person who just wants to do what the manual says? The Book plays MP3s and MP4s, lets you adjust the font, and even comes preloaded with classic eBooks right off the bat. Warranty: 90 Day Woot Limited Warranty. Learn more. I couldn't get it to do anything when I connected to my library's wifi. I tried for 30 minutes to check my email, and the hourglass never went away, so don't count on using Internet with this unit.
The battery life seems very short before it needs recharging, but the unit will run off the electrical charging connection, so if you find a plug, you can still use the unit on low battery as it recharges.
The default font is huge and very bold, and you can't make universal changes in the default font. You have to change the look of each book you want to read, but at least it remembers the font face and size you have chosen when you return to the book. I wanted it especially for its text-to-speech capability, which could be better, but it's not bad. There is no control of the speed of the speech, which would be nice. It also would be nice to have internet connectivity, but it just doesn't seem to work, at least for me.
I got a refurblished unit that came with a scratched screen, but maybe that's what you get with a refurbished unit. Pros: Very good reader. Does just what a e-reader needs to. Plays mp4 movies very well. Overall Review: Did not buy on Newegg but usually do get everything here. Pros: Purchased for an older lady without much tech experience. It powers on very quickly, has an incredibly simple interface, and the web browser is surprisingly snappy at loading mobile pages.
It is able to read many formats and play music, movies and view pictures too. The screen is bright adjustable and clear, and the Zoom feature of the reader is very helpful. Cons: You have to enable wi-fi each time you turn it on. There's no Zoom in the browser.
You can't rename browser favorites. For some of the ebooks epub format , the formatting was not recognized - so they kind of show as 1 long paragraph, with the title of the book at the start of each screen, interrupting sentences.
My mom isn't very tech savvy, so she wanted something very simply. She's pleased that it has the little keyboard and thumbstick for easy navigation.
She can read ebooks easily, but the small font with no option to zoom makes using the browser difficult for her. But the instruction book is very clear and she learned how to use the tablet very well!
